Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer licenses to individual police officers?

Subscriptions are only available to law enforcement agencies, police associations, and insurance/risk pool organizations.

Can our police agency participate in a free trial first to see if we like it?

Absolutely! We want to give your law enforcement agency a free trial. You can request it by clicking the button below.

Are your trainings reviewed by an attorney?

Yes, our trainings related to legal authority are reviewed by The Briefing Room’s Legal Counsel, a highly experienced attorney specializing in defending law enforcement agencies against lawsuits.

What is a RISE Training Block?

A Rise Training Block consists of a short video, a key points worksheet and any sourced material that was presented in the video. These three components are packaged into a training block covering one simple concept designed to make it easy for supervisors to present to their shift of officers. RISE stands for Researched, Informative, Short and Engaging. All training presented by The Briefing Room must contain these four characteristics. Click the button below to view a sample RISE Training Block.

Is your training only applicable to patrol operations?

No, The Briefing Room contains an ever growing library of topics covering patrol, custody and investigations. And since most court cases deal with constitutional rights, they are applicable to everyone in law enforcement, regardless of their current assignment.

When our agency subscribes, who will get a login to the platform?

Access is entirely up to the subscribing agency. The Briefing Room’s training is designed to be facilitated by a supervisor (the teacher) to their officers (the students). Therefore, most agencies choose to provide licenses to all their supervisors, some trainers and some administrators. An agency can provide log-in access to every employee if they choose but it’s rare for that to happen.

Are records kept showing who received training?

The newest version of The Briefing Room platform has an easy-to-use record keeping function that allows supervisors to record which officers were present and how long was spent on the training. Those records are retrievable at any time by your agency.

How do supervisors use the training blocks?

All a supervisor needs to do is log into their account and select a video to watch.  The video and its associated resources (Key Points Worksheet, the entire case that referenced in the video, etc…) are instantly available for them to train their shift.

Why are most of the videos only about 90 seconds long?

Limiting the length of the videos forces presenters to be clear and concise with their message and stick to only teaching one concept.  It also ensures students won’t tune out due to boredom. The short length also gives supervisors enough time for discussion after the video plays so officers can get out to the field or back to their work stations quickly.

What if a video teaches something that isn’t reflective of the way our agency normally operates?

The majority of The Briefing Room topics are based on case law and incorporate direct quotes from the court. We also provide all material that was referenced, such as the entire case opinion. Occasionally, officers may dismiss training because it “isn’t how we’ve always done it.” Instead, we encourage your agency to open an internal discussion regarding if your operating procedures should be modified to comply with the case that was presented.

What if a video legitimately doesn’t apply to our agency’s training or policy?

RISE Training Blocks are designed to empower your supervisors to select the training that best applies to their shift of officers.  If a video isn’t applicable, they can skip it. As an additional safeguard, the administrative portal of the newest version of The Briefing Room also allows agencies to hide videos they don’t want their officers watching.

Since The Briefing Room is based in California, is your training applicable to agencies outside of California?

Yes.  Our videos are categorized by State, Court Circuit, etc… making it easy to filter the videos by topic or location.  While we are based in California, we have many subscribing agencies all over the United States. The majority of the RISE Training Blocks cover Federal Case Law and industry-wide best practices.

Can our agency only pay for our Patrol Division to have access?

We do not allow partial agency subscriptions for several reasons. Most important is that the court cases covered are applicable to all law enforcement officers, regardless of current assignment. For example, Detectives must understand search and seizure laws just as well as every patrol officer. Also, most officers change assignments occasionally throughout their career and staying current on their legal authority is essential to reducing liability agency-wide.
